![]() ![]() The AES Corporation took over the station in a 50/50 partnership with Tractebel of Belgium in 1992 when NIE was privatised and sold its four power stations in Northern Ireland. This conversion took place between 19, and the power station has burned almost exclusively only coal ever since. But following a change in generating policies in Northern Ireland in 1985 following the increase in oil prices, it was decided the plant would be converted to burn coal as well as oil. The power station was originally fuelled by only oil, as it was the lowest cost fuel at the time. The station opened on 1 February 1981, when the first of the two generating unit went into operation. Due to government spending restrictions in the early 1980s the project was truncated to two units. The station was originally designed to use four 300 megawatt (MW) generating units. The Cleveland Bridge Company also worked on the construction of the station. Kilroot power station was designed and built by Kennedy and Donkin, consultants for Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE), commencing in 1974. It is also one of County Antrim's top 100 employers. It is the only coal-fired power station operating in Northern Ireland, and once produced a third of the country's electricity. In 2019 it was sold to a subsidiary of Energetický a průmyslový holding. Since the privatisation of Northern Ireland Electricity in 1992, the power station has been owned by the AES Corporation. The station generates 560 megawatts (MW) of electricity from dual coal and oil fuelled generators, along with approximately 141 megawatts (MW) from four Gas Turbines and 10 MW of battery energy storage from the Kilroot Advancion Energy Storage Array. The new operation will be characterised by the same high levels of service, operational excellence and quality Propeller have been providing across the UK mainland.Kilroot power station is a coal and oil power station on the north shore of Belfast Lough at Kilroot near Carrickfergus in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. Backed by such resources, Propeller will have the ability to be competitive, responsive and flexible. In addition, Nicholls operate a large fleet of trucks of all sizes, plus numerous oil depots scattered strategically around Northern Ireland. This latest move is done in conjunction with Nicholl Fuel Oils, 50% owner of Oil NRG and the largest private oil distributor in Northern Ireland and joint owner of Puma Energy Belfast which in turn owns and operates the 170,000 cbm ex BP Belfast Oil Terminal. During 2018 and early 2019 Propeller expanded its services to the rest of the UK, driven in part by Oil NRG’s acquisition of Southern UK based Conquest Oil, coupled with its own organic growth. The service is supported by the resources of Oil NRG, including 80+ trucks and 5 operating fuel depots. Propeller, which is affiliated to a leading UK Oil distributor, Oil NRG, commenced supplying in the Northeast UK market late 2017. Plans are underway to perform deliveries throughout the rest of the Republic of Ireland also in the not too distant future. These ports include, but are not limited to, Belfast, Carrickfergus, Larne, Londonderry, Warrenpoint, Greenore and Dundalk. Propeller Fuels Limited, a UK based physical supplier of gasoil to the marine sector, announces with immediate effect the ability to supply to ports in Northern Ireland and the Northern Part of the Republic of Ireland.
